A historical site in Downtown McAllen. La Estrella bakery was first built in 1927 by Jose Fuentes. The first ovens were wood burning and upgraded to gas in the 1940's. This bakery was famous for its French bread, pan de polvo, and so many other baked goods. During the Great Depression between 1929-1947, Jose Fuentes used to pay his employees with provisions just to keep the business going. He cared about his family, employees, and his customers.La Estrella Bakery served the community for over 60 years. The building is now gone, but the rich history is still remembered by so many.
